In this episode of the Intermittent Fasting Stories podcast, host Gin Stephens speaks to sisters Michelle Brown, a gifted and talented teacher, and Ronni Jones, an accountant. Michelle grew up knowing she was adopted, and when she connected with her birth mother in her 30s, she learned she had a sister as well. Upon meeting, the two women discovered many things in common, including a shared struggle with weight. They both report multiple rounds of Weight Watchers, losing and ultimately re-gaining weight.
On a road trip, Michelle needed an audiobook and impulsively downloaded Dr. Jason Fung’s Obesity Code before heading to pick Ronni up. They listened together and were convinced by the science, beginning an alternate-day fasting regimen soon after on January 1st of 2018. They supported each other through that process for months, both finding some success, and then found the Intermittent Fasting Podcast and Delay, Don’t Deny. Michelle shifted into an OMAD plan, with Ronni continuing ADF; Ronni ate fairly strict keto and Michelle followed a lower carb (but not keto) plan that is lower carb.
Ronni is now down 60 lbs. and intends to continue her alternate-day plan in maintenance. She eats a more relaxed version of keto where she allows herself indulgences and loves trusting her body “not to go off the deep end.” IF has helped with her high blood pressure, her achy joints, and her plantar fasciitis. Michelle has lost around 30 lbs. and has experienced improvement in her long-standing fibromyalgia symptoms. The sisters have begun sharing about IF with people in their lives, and both consider it to be their permanent lifestyle.
